About This Quote

This quote captures one of the most important themes in the novel "Novelty" by James Joyce. The freedom that women are supposed to have is not what they want. They want complete freedom, but it is impossible for any woman to have complete freedom. Women are forever chained to their “role” of being wives and mothers. Just as wives are supposed to do everything for their husbands, mothers are supposed to take care of their children.
